What is this scent called?
The smell released after a rain shower is known as petrichor. The word "petrichor" is derived from Greek, where "petra" means rock and "ichor" refers to the divine fluid that flows through the veins of the gods. It is an appropriate name, as petrichor seems to contain the essence of the earth itself.

Where is it from?
Petrichor is formed by a combination of different factors. A major contribution comes from certain chemicals secreted by soil bacteria called actinomycetes. These bacteria live in the soil and produce odorants, such as geosmin, that form the characteristic earthy smell of petrichor. In addition, plant oils and volatiles that accumulate on surfaces, such as rocks and soil, also contribute to the odor.

How long must it have been dry to smell this?
In order to detect the smell of petrichor, sufficient moisture must have built up in the soil before it starts to rain. If it has been dry for quite some time, the soil and other surfaces can absorb the odorous compounds. Then, when it starts to rain, these stored odorants will be released and mix with the fresh raindrops, creating petrichor. It is generally believed that it must have been dry for at least several weeks before petrichor is clearly visible.
Conclusion
Petrichor , the scent released by rain, is an intriguing phenomenon that enchants our senses and connects us to the earth. The odor is caused by the chemicals secreted by soil bacteria and the accumulation of volatile compounds on surfaces. It requires a period of dryness before the scent can develop and be released during a rain shower.
